The more I see of the Caucasians, the more I am convinced, notwithstanding the
bad character they bear abroad, that they are naturally a kind-hearted people; and though
travellers, no doubt, have had abundant reason to complain of their brigandage, this does
not emanate from cruelty, but long-established usage. This sanctions the custom, that
every foreigner who enters their country, without placing himself under the protection of
a chief, who will be answerable for his good conduct, becomes the property of the first
Circassian who chooses to seize him as a slave. This chief, or elder, receives the appellation of Konak. On the other
hand, the traveller who, on entering the country, conforms to the above rule, may confide to the care of a Circassian not only
his property but his life; and any one of these people would, if it were necessary, die in his defence. In short, in all my
wanderings, and they have been not a few, I never found the inhabitants of any country more hospitable, generous,
courteous, or courageous.

1 Read the text and learn the beginning of the history of Maikop.
Maikop was founded in 1857 as a Russian Kuban Cossack fortress. It served as an important
strategic outpost during the finale of the Caucasian War in 1858–1863. It was granted town status in
The early Bronze Age Maikop culture has been named after the city after the discovery of a
royal burial site there in 1897.
In 1911, oil deposits were discovered in the vicinity of Maikop.
In 1936, Maikop and the surrounding region was merged with Adyghe Autonomous Oblast,
and became the administrative center of the autonomy. Maikop was occupied by the Wehrmacht from August 1942 to
January 1943, when it was liberated by the Transcaucasian Front of the Red Army.
Since 1991, Maikop has been the capital of the Republic of Adygea in the Russian Federation.
On the south side of the city, alongside the Belaya River is the military complex housing the 131st

Teacher: All the pupils must be very polite, active, patient and attentive.
Let’s begin our telebrige between Maikop and Washington! Now let’s remember some facts about these cities. Our
pupils from Russia and America will speak just now!
pupil from Maikop: Adyghea, the first region in the list of the subjects of the Russian Federation, is situated on
the picturesque slopes of the Caucasian Ridge in the valley of the rivers Kuban and Laba. The whole area of the
republic is 7,800square kilometers, with a population of 460,000 residents. On the banks of the mountain river of

Maikop was founded on 25 May 1857.Originally a fortress; it later turned into a settlement. Maikop means “valley of
wild apple trees”, in the Adyghe language. So, one of the symbols in town are the apple-tree leaves. Maikop gained
world notoriety twice: first when the Maikop Burial Mound was discovered, and second in 1909 when academician
M. M. Gubkin discovered oil here.
pupil from Washington: Washington D. C. is the capital of the United States and the centre of its government. It’s
a city and district-the District of Columbia (D. C.). Don’t confuse with the State of Washington, which is located in
the northwest of the United States. Washington, D. C., is located on the East Coast. It was chosen by George

Teacher: Thank you! Now we have learned the history of these cities Maikop and Washington. Every country has its
symbols. Let’s speak about the official symbols of Russia and the USA.
pupil from Washington: The official symbols of the USA are: the American flag, the national anthem, the
national emblem, the Statue of Liberty. Показывает на постере изображения этих символов (Приложение1).
The American flag is often called “The Stars and Stripes”, it is also called “Old Glory”. It represents the growth of the
nation. It has 13 horizontal stripes which stand for the original 13 states. In the top left hand corner there are 50 white
stars: one star for each state.
The national anthem is “The Star Spangled Banner”. The words written during the Anglo-American war of 1812-1814

The eagle became the national emblem of the country in 1782. It has an olive branch (a symbol of peace) and arrows
(a symbol of strength). You can see the eagle on the back of a dollar bill.
The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of American democracy. It stands on Liberty Island in New York. France gave the
statue to America in 1884 as a symbol of friendship.
pupil from Maikop: One Russian symbol is the Russian national flag. Показывает флаг России (Приложение
2) . This flag has three wide stripes. They are white, blue and red. The upper stripe is white, the middle stripe is blue
and the red stripe is at the bottom. These colours have always been symbolic in Russia: white– noble and sincere,
blue– honest and devoted– devoted to friends, family and to the country. The red colour has always meant love and
Teacher: And what are the non-official symbols of these countries?
Pupils from Maikop : Non-official symbols of the USA I think are: hamburgers, Mc. Donald’s, W. Disney,
Hollywood, President, States, Superstar, Dollar, Jack London, Mark Twain, Henry Ford, Elvis Presley, Louis
Armstrong, George Washington …
Pupils from Washington: Non-official symbols of Russia are: Moscow, the Red Square, the Bolshoy Theatre,
samovar, balalaika, matryoshka, a birch tree-beryozka, Russian bear, very cold winter, A.S. Pushkin, Mikhail
Lomonosov, U.Gagarin, P.I. Tchaikovsky, the Tretyakov Gallery, F.Dostoevsky and many others.
Teacher: Thank you very much! Can you describe the nature of your regions?
pupil from Maikop: The foothills of this region are very beautiful. The Caucasian mountains are not very high
here. The land is very rich. Climate here is variable, but still mild and warm. Every season is very nice, but autumn is
especially nice, rich and warm. The republic gets a large number of fruits and vegetables. In 1924 the famous
Caucasian State Nature Reserve was founded in Adyghea. Here one can see hundreds kinds of birds, 1,500 species of
plants, 60 kinds of animals. The people are very proud of their reserve and attentively take care of all species.
pupil from Washington: The United States of America stretches from Atlantic Ocean across North America and
far into the Pacific. Because of such a huge size of the country the climate differs from one part of the country to
another. In the east there are the Appalachian Mountains.
Teacher– How do you take care of nature in your regions? Let’s have a talk about it.
pupil from Washington: Air, water and soil are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air can
cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. On polluted soil food cannot be grown.
Pollution is as complicated as serious problem all over the world. But pollution can be reduced gradually. Scientists
and engineers find the ways to reduce pollution from automobiles and factories. Government pass the laws that make
enterprises take measures for reducing of pollution. Individuals and groups of people are work together to persuade
enterprises to stop polluting activities.
pupil from Maikop: Ecology is a science which studies the relationship between all forms of life on our planet
with its environment. This word came from the Greek “oikos” which means “home”. This idea of “home” includes the
whole planet of ours. Many territories, water basins, lakes, rivers, seas, oceans– and the atmosphere are polluted with
all kinds of technological, agricultural, chemical, nuclear and other wastes. The intensive development of sciences,
industry and chemistry has made the pollution of our environment a global problem which should be solved by all
Teacher: Every city has its own sightseeings. What are the places of interest in your cities?
pupil from Maikop: Maikop has a rich historical and cultural heritage. There are more than 250 monuments of
architecture, history and culture in it. The system of cultural institutions is represented by houses of culture, children’s
art schools, the Town Park of Culture and Rest, a picture gallery, the National Museum and North-Caucasian branch
of the State East Museum. There are 19 libraries. Many buildings fulfill their main cultural mission, being the centre
of the spiritual life of both residents and tourists. Among these buildings are Palace of culture “Druzhba” and Pushkin
Public House which are the main theatres stages for two acting groups– Russian and Adygh drama theatres, Town
House of Culture “Giant”, movie theatre “October”, State Philharmonic Society.
pupil from Washington: Комментирует отрывок из видеофильма “США” о столице.
Teacher: What can you say about tourism development in your cities?
pupil from Washington: Washington D. C. has long wide avenues, gardens, beautiful parks and no sky scrapers at
all, because no other building must be taller than the Capitol– the seat of the American Congress. The White House is
the President’s resident was built in 1799. There are many research institutes, five universities, the National Academy
of Science, the Library of Congress, the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the
National Mall and Museums. There is one more well-known building in Washington– Pentagon, the residence of the
US Military department. It is situated in the suburbs to the south of the Potomac River.
pupil from Maikop: Maikop takes a worthy place on the tourist map of the Russian Federation, which is defined
by traditional hiking and horse riding as well as by the town location not far from the mountainous part of the
Republic. It is impossible to describe the beauty of the foothills. The plateau Lago-Naki, the Fisht and Oshten
Mountains, the mountain river Belaya and Kurzhips, an incomparable variety of landscapes, mineral resources and
exotic natural landscapes– all these aspects create unique conditions for rest, treatment and tourism development.
Building the road from Maikop to Tuapse made our town the basic cross-road on the way to the Black Sea coast.
Teacher: Thank you for such an interesting talk about your cities! I wish you were able to visit Maykop and

The head of the government in Adygea is the Head (called "President" until May
2011), who is appointed for a five-year term. Proficiency in the Adyghe language is a prerequisite
for the candidate.
The current Head, Aslan Tkhakushinov (since January 13, 2007), succeeded Hazret Sovmen, appointed by
Vladimir Putin, although he received only 2% of the vote in 2002. There is also a directly elected State Council(Khase
or Xase—not to be confused with the Adyghe Khase, a union of Adyghe who supported Sovmen for a second term),
which comprises the Council of Representatives and the Council of the Republic. Both councils are elected every five
years and have 27 deputies each.
The republic sends three representatives to the parliament of the Russian
Federation; one to the State Duma and the other two to the Federation Council.
The Constitution of the Republic of Adygea was adopted on May 14, 1995.
The Republic of Adygea is administratively divided into seven districts (raions),
two cities|towns, and five urban-type settlements.Municipally, the republic is divided into
two urban okrugs, five urban settlements, and 46 rural settlements.

2 Read the texts about the ecology of Adyghei republic and match them with the photos. Find
the main idea in each text.
1. Th e people of our region as well as the whole population of the country are worried about the local environmental
problems. Our towns and villages suff er from air pollution which affects human health and the environment.
Polluted air causes cancer, bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia and other serious health
problems. The sources of air pollution are industrial smokestacks, trucks, cars and buses,
Thousands of automobiles add tons of poison to the atmosphere every day. In fact, transport is
one of the main offenders in poisoning the environment. Th e newspapers write that the
concentration of harmful substances in the air in our towns is over ten times the admissible
2. But the problem doesn’t stop there. The pollution of water is a very acute problem, too. We
have rivers in Adyghea. People throw tins and paper into it. Nothing can live or grow in the
polluted water now. The water is not blue but brown with rubbish floating in it.
3. And one more problem of our towns in recent years has been rubbish and litter . For many
years we have been throwing things away. Now people have to face facts. 98 % of the rubbish
goes into the ground. There are about 500 dumps on the territory of the region now. The reason
is the shortage of petrol or money. Very oft en people leave cans and tins on the pavements. The
Earth’s forests are oft en called “the lungs of the planet”. We are proud of our forests but they
are in danger.
They are becoming smaller and smaller and the situation is growing worse every day. Many
companies are cutting down trees in the region to make profits, big areas of forests are burnt.
Everybody knows about the necessity to protect nature.

Lesson 7. The Fauna
1. Read and translate the text.
Fauna in Adyghei Republic is very rich and diverse. There are 62 species of mammals, 22 kinds
of rodents, 10 kinds of predators, 15 kinds of reptiles, a lot of fish,316 species of birds a lot of which
return back in winter. The endemics are Caucasian goats, blackcock, partridge and others. In the forests
you can find hares, wolves, bears, foxes, deer, weasels, aurochs, otters and others. Among the birds are
doves, redstarts, golden eagles, heath-cocks, swallows and so on. A lot of the animals and birds are put
down into the Red Book, they are guarded by the State. In the local museums you can find some kinds
of them and learn a lot of new facts about them.

Adyghe tourist Routes are very beautiful and fascinating. They lay along
the mountain river canyons, then meet the waterfalls, go round the white-
capped tops of Fishta and Oshten, and cross the| legendary Lagonaki plateau.
Those who wish to spend a holiday or weekend on these healthy paths are
awaited by numerous monuments: ancient barrows, sites of ancient settlements,
rock carvings and petro glyphs. And of course, they'll see the astonishing
ancient tombs - «dolmen» - the same age as the Egyptian Pyramids. They are so
- called «сырп-ун» - «syrp-un» - dwarfs house. There are hundreds of strange
constructions built from multition tomb-stones. In the most picturesque places of

Lesson12. Pushkin about the Caucasus
1 .Read the poem
Below me the silver-capped Caucasus lies....................
A stream at my feet rushes foaming and roaring.
I watch a lone eagle, over the peaks calmly soaring,
Drift near as he motionless circles the skies.
Here rivers are born that tear mountains asunder
And landslides begin with a crash as a thunder
Here float solemn storm clouds, and through them cascade
Swift torrents of water; they plunge o'er the edges
Of great, naked cliffs and spill down to the ledges
That patches of moss and dry brush wood invade.
Beneath spread green groves, lush with herbs
Where birds dwell in peace and where deer
Lower still, in the hills, nestle men;flocks of sheep
The pasturelands roam, to the gay, flowery meadow
Where courses Aragva, her banks clothed in shadow
A shepherd descends. In a narrow and deep
Ravine a poor horseman lurks , tense and unsleeping,
And wild, laugh-crazed Terek goes tumbling and leaping.
He lashes about like a beast in a cage
With food out of reach, full of hunger and craving.
Strikes out at the shore in a frenzy and rage
Alas! he is thwarted : the mountains surround him
Mute, threatening giants, they press darky round him.
2. Read the translation
Кавказ подо мною. Один в вышине
Стою над снегами у края стремнины,
Орел, с отдаленной поднявшись вершины,
Парит неподвижно со мной наравне.
Отселе я вижу потоков рождение
И первое горных обвалов движение.
Здесь тучи смиренно идут подо мной;
Сквозь них, низвергаясь, шумят водопады;
Под ними утесов нагие громады;
Где Терек играет в свирепом весельи;
Играет и воет, как зверь молодой,
Завидевший птицу из клетки железной,
И бьется о берег в вражде бесполезной,
И лижет утесы голодной волной...

the task was impracticable. The servant left the house to die. But in one of distant countries he met the
girl, who decided to help him and fulfill the task.
Pshi very soon married that girl. As soon as the wedding festivities have finished Pshi told his young wife
that he had to leave her for 15 years and went to the war. Before leaving he told her: «I'm leaving for 15
years. This mare and bitch will stay with you, and I take the foal and the male (dog) with me». When I
come back you must meet me with my son riding the stallion, born by this mare and the dog, born by
this bitch and my male (dog). Making all these orders the husband took the field .
The people heard about his orders and they were very sorry for his wife, because his tasks
were impracticable.A young woman thought for some time then made a decision. She told about her
decision only to her servant and made him keep it in secret. She followed her husband
in a man's dress and rode the left mare and took the bitch with her.At the same time
Pshi was enjoying his life eating, drinking tasty things and playing games of
chance.Meanwhile his wife joined his regiment and made friends with some of
them. The young people and Pshi himself didn't recognise a woman and she decided
to outwit her husband.Once in a company of four young men and her husband she won

you'll give me your stallion for a ride for a fortnight.Pshi agreed. She won the game and
took the horse for 15 days and kept it together with her mare.In some days she played

everything what had happened. In witness of her words she showed them her husband's golden seal-ring she had won.
Then she decided to leave her husband. But Pshi understood what a wise and courageous wife he had got and asked

1c.A Glimpse on Adyghe
Adyghe etiquette and moral norms («habza» - in Kabardian) has been forming for many centuries and in force of that reason
naturally maintained the traces of different historical formations: e.g. primitive communal system, etc.
The main components of adyghe etiquette are special customs, temper which called forth such most important
moral categories as honesty, honour, nobility, wisdom, shame, truthfulness, piety, sensitiveness, good behaviour
abilities, respect to the elder people and to the persons of opposite sex and so on.
2 Read the text and do the tasks below.
When two men are walking or riding a horse it's a law that the elder one has to stand right. If there are three of them
the oldest man must be in the middle, and the youngest one on the right of him and another one on the left. Thus they are
sitting at the table also.
If a man was walking far ahead, nobody should call to him, but one had to catch up with him, and then greet him.
Only then you could tell him everything you wanted.
primitive communal system
During the talk nobody should interrupt the elder man. And when he appeared everybody who were sitting had to
stand up and greet him.
Not a single festival or event took place without the elder man, called «tamada». Even the
wedding party and the table laid for it became not only the place for dances, enjoyments and
feast. It was some kind of school for the youth, where «tamada» learned inadvertently the customs
and traditions of their peoples.
For example, once J.Bell was the witness of this episode when he visited Agyghea.
According to the customs before opening the festival the elder («tamada») asked all
people present in the hall to be wise, discreet and good tempered. He didn't want anybody
overshadow the family's holiday. He also asked «to forget for the time the animosity, if there it is, between the men present)). There
was such a good custom among all the adyghe people.
