,
S words and say if he was right. The more I see of the Caucasians, the more I am convinced, notwithstanding the bad character they bear abroad, that they are naturally a kind-hearted people; and though travellers, no doubt, have had abundant reason to complain of their brigandage, this does not emanate from cruelty, but long-established usage. This sanctions the custom, that every foreigner who enters their country, without placing himself under the protection of a chief, who will be answerable for his good conduct, becomes the property of the first Circassian who chooses to seize him as a slave. This chief, or elder, receives the appellation of Konak. On the other hand, the traveller who, on entering the country, conforms to the above rule, may confide to the care of a Circassian not only his property but his life; and any one of these people would, if it were necessary, die in his defence. In short, in all my wanderings, and they have been not a few, I never found the inhabitants of any country more hospitable, generous, courteous, or courageous.

Adyghea, the first region in the list of the subjects of the Russian Federation, is situated on the picturesque slopes of the Caucasian Ridge in the valley of the rivers Kuban and Laba. The whole area of the republic is 7,800square kilometers, with a population of 460,000 residents. On the banks of the mountain river of Belaya we can see Maikop-the capital of Adyghea. It is its administrative, economic and cultural centre. The town of Maikop was founded on 25 May 1857.Originally a fortress; it later turned into a settlement. Maikop means “valley of wild apple trees”, in the Adyghe language. So, one of the symbols in town are the apple-tree leaves. Maikop gained world notoriety twice: first when the Maikop Burial Mound was discovered, and second in 1909 when academician M. M. Gubkin discovered oil here.

Air, water and soil are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. On polluted soil food cannot be grown. Pollution is as complicated as serious problem all over the world. But pollution can be reduced gradually. Scientists and engineers find the ways to reduce pollution from automobiles and factories. Government pass the laws that make enterprises take measures for reducing of pollution. Individuals and groups of people are work together to persuade enterprises to stop polluting activities.

Ecology is a science which studies the relationship between all forms of life on our planet with its environment. This word came from the Greek “oikos” which means “home”. This idea of “home” includes the whole planet of ours. Many territories, water basins, lakes, rivers, seas, oceans– and the atmosphere are polluted with all kinds of technological, agricultural, chemical, nuclear and other wastes. The intensive development of sciences, industry and chemistry has made the pollution of our environment a global problem which should be solved by all means.

The White House is the President’s resident was built in 1799. There are many research institutes, five universities, the National Academy of Science, the Library of Congress, the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the National Mall and Museums. There is one more well-known building in Washington– Pentagon, the residence of the US Military department. It is situated in the suburbs to the south of the Potomac River.
6

th

pupil from Maikop:
Maikop takes a worthy place on the tourist map of the Russian Federation, which is defined by traditional hiking and horse riding as well as by the town location not far from the mountainous part of the Republic. It is impossible to describe the beauty of the foothills. The plateau Lago-Naki, the Fisht and Oshten Mountains, the mountain river Belaya and Kurzhips, an incomparable variety of landscapes, mineral resources and exotic natural landscapes– all these aspects create unique conditions for rest, treatment and tourism development. Building the road from Maikop to Tuapse made our town the basic cross-road on the way to the Black Sea coast.

The head of the government in Adygea is the Head (called "President" until May 2011), who is appointed for a five-year term. Proficiency in the Adyghe language is a prerequisite for the candidate. The current Head, Aslan Tkhakushinov (since January 13, 2007), succeeded Hazret Sovmen, appointed by Vladimir Putin, although he received only 2% of the vote in 2002. There is also a directly elected State Council(Khase or Xase—not to be confused with the Adyghe Khase, a union of Adyghe who supported Sovmen for a second term), which comprises the Council of Representatives and the Council of the Republic. Both councils are elected every five years and have 27 deputies each. The republic sends three representatives to the parliament of the Russian Federation; one to the State Duma and the other two to the Federation Council. The Constitution of the Republic of Adygea was adopted on May 14, 1995. The Republic of Adygea is administratively divided into seven districts (raions), two cities|towns, and five urban-type settlements.Municipally, the republic is divided into two urban okrugs, five urban settlements, and 46 rural settlements.

Lesson 6 . Environmental problems

Warm-up

1a
Read the poem below Hug the Earth The Earth is a garden. Helping Mother Earth It’s a beautiful place We can peacefully roam For all living creatures, We all deserve a place For all the human race. We can call our home. Lorraine Bayes
• What does this poem speak about?

1b Can you call your region a beautiful garden? Explain your opinion.

Reading

2 Read the texts about the ecology of Adyghei republic and match them with the photos. Find

the main idea in each text.

1.
Th e people of our region as well as the whole population of the country are worried about the local environmental problems. Our towns and villages suff er from
air pollution
which affects human health and the environment. Polluted air causes cancer, bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia and other serious health problems. The sources of air pollution are industrial smokestacks, trucks, cars and buses, burning forests. Thousands of automobiles add tons of poison to the atmosphere every day. In fact, transport is one of the main offenders in poisoning the environment. Th e newspapers write that the concentration of harmful substances in the air in our towns is over ten times the admissible level.
2.
But the problem doesn’t stop there.
The pollution of water
is a very acute problem, too. We have rivers in Adyghea. People throw tins and paper into it. Nothing can live or grow in the polluted water now. The water is not blue but brown with rubbish floating in it.
3.
And one more problem of our towns in recent years has been
rubbish and litter
. For many years we have been throwing things away. Now people have to face facts. 98 % of the rubbish goes into the ground. There are about 500 dumps on the territory of the region now. The reason is the shortage of petrol or money. Very oft en people leave cans and tins on the pavements. The Earth’s forests are oft en called “the lungs of the planet”. We are proud of our forests but they are in danger. They are becoming smaller and smaller and the situation is growing worse every day. Many companies are cutting down trees in the region to make profits, big areas of forests are burnt. Everybody knows about the necessity to protect nature.
3 Speak about the results of people’s influence on the

environment

using the model.

Model: People pollute the air. → The air is polluted.
1. Polluted air causes health problems. 2. We see smoke coming out of chimneys. 3. People breathe in tons of harmful substances. 4. Plants and automobiles add tons of poison to the atmosphere. 5. People throw tins and cans into rivers. 6. Many companies cut down trees.

Beneath spread green groves, lush with herbs and sweet-scented, Where birds dwell in peace and where deer browse, contented. Lower still, in the hills, nestle men;flocks of sheep The pasturelands roam, to the gay, flowery meadow Where courses Aragva, her banks clothed in shadow A shepherd descends. In a narrow and deep Ravine a poor horseman lurks , tense and unsleeping, And wild, laugh-crazed Terek goes tumbling and leaping. Adyghe Legends and Fables

A Clever Wife
A man rode to pay a visit on horse-back to another village. His mare was in foal. The hosts had no any tethering post, so he tied up his horse to the host's bullock cart. During the night the mare foaled. In the morning the host came out into the yard and saw a stallion. He was very glad and began boasting that his bullock cart foaled. The guest seeing the stallion tried to explain that it was his mare in foal. They began arguing and decided I; go to Pshi (the duke) to find out the truth. The duke was out so his wife came out. She asked: «What affair have you got?» The men told everything. The woman listened to them carefully then said: «You have to wait for the duke to come back. He is busy driving away the sea-fish out of the millet-field. He'll be back very soon!» The two men were astonished and greatly surprised at her words. The debaters cried together: «What's the matter with you. How can fish come out of the sea to the millet field!» - Why, she said - it is as true as your ballock cart foaled and I brought you a stallion. If you don't believe then give him back his stallion. What had the ! host to do, he returned the little horse to the guest. When the duke I came back the people told him how his wife decided the problem of j the two noblemen. They considered it as an insult for Pshi. He was I greatly angry and decided to divorce her. « You've insulted me interfering in man's affairs. You can't stay here any more. Go to your parents back and you can take anything you like from my house». «Well, she said, - I'll leave you, but first, let's have the seven days parting festivity». Pshi agreed. For seven days the inhabitants of the oaul (ayn) ate, danced and enjoyed themselves. During all seven days Pshi (the duke) was deeply thinking and nearly didn't sleep at all. The guests left and the festivity was ended. Pshi at once went to bed and slept instantly. His wife ordered the servants to yoke oxen, put there the sleeping pshi, sat into the cart and went to her parents. Pshi was sleeping long. When he awoke he couldn't understand where he was. He asked «Where am I?» He was told that he came together with his wife to her parents. He ordered for his wife. - «You've made the worse thing than before. How dared you take me here? -But you let me take from your house the thing I like, yourself. And I need only you, nothing else I took from your house. Pshi plunged deep in thought for some time. Then he said: «It was no use to listen to the people's words. I nearly lost such a wise wife». He ordered to yoke oxen, took his wife and went home together with her.

A Wise Girl
Once upon a time there lived a cruel rich man («пши - pshi» - in Kabardian). He was not yet married and his father told him to find the fiancée. Then this rich young man gave a very difficult task to his servant. The servant was in desparation as the task was impracticable. The servant left the house to die. But in one of distant countries he met the girl, who decided to help him and fulfill the task. Pshi very soon married that girl. As soon as the wedding festivities have finished Pshi told his young wife that he had to leave her for 15 years and went to the war. Before leaving he told her: «I'm leaving for 15 years. This mare and bitch will stay with you, and I take the foal and the male (dog) with me». When I come back you must meet me with my son riding the stallion, born by this mare and the dog, born by this bitch and my male (dog). Making all these orders the husband took the field . The people heard about his orders and they were very sorry for his wife, because his tasks were impracticable.A young woman thought for some time then made a decision. She told about her decision only to her servant and made him keep it in secret. She followed her husband in a man's dress and rode the left mare and took the bitch with her.At the same time Pshi was enjoying his life eating, drinking tasty things and playing games of chance.Meanwhile his wife joined his regiment and made friends with some of them. The young people and Pshi himself didn't recognise a woman and she decided to outwit her husband.Once in a company of four young men and her husband she won the game. Next time she told Pshi: «If you win the game M give you some gold, if I win, you'll give me your stallion for a ride for a fortnight.Pshi agreed. She won the game and took the horse for 15 days and kept it together with her mare.In some days she played for the male dog. And for the third time she played for her husband's nice golden seal- ring. In all these cases she won the game. At last she said to Pshi that she had a very pretty sister and if he wins the girl will spend a week with Pshi. He was very glad with these words and he won the game. So the young woman spent a week together with her husband. Then she returned home.Nobody in the village knew that she was away. Time passed. A nice foal was born by the mare, a beautiful puppy was born and at last the strong healthy baby was born by the woman. She was very happy. Fifteen years passed. Pshi was coming back home. The malicious people from the village denounced to him that his wife had a baby from an unknown man. Pshi decided to execute her. His wife was clever and understood that she had to prepare for the meeting with her husband. So she rolled a mat as a man of straw, put her dressings on it and put it at the doorway. She hid herself behind the door. Pshi rushed the door open and cut the strawman, thinking it was his wife. Then his wife appeared and told him that she wished a talk with him first. She called her servant and all her brothers, her husband and told all of them everything what had happened. In witness of her words she showed them her husband's golden seal-ring she had won. Then she decided to leave her husband. But Pshi understood what a wise and courageous wife he had got and asked her to stay with him. The people who told him a lie he ordereded to execute. The wife and the husband lived long and happily and had a lot of beautiful children.

According to the customs before opening the festival the elder («tamada») asked all people present in the hall to be wise, discreet and good tempered.
