Script for the video “How is power divided in the United States government?”
Part 1
The political system of the USA is the presidential Republic.
The President of the United States is the head of state but he does not act alone. In fact, he is only
one piece of the power puzzle. When the American Revolution ended in 1783 the US government was
in the state of change. The Founding Fathers did not want to establish another country that was ruled
by a king. They agreed to have a strong and fair national government that protected individual
freedoms of all people.
A new Constitution was adopted in 1787. All the power was divided into three separate branches
and the system of checks and balances. They agreed that these branches would work together to run
the country. The powers given to each are balanced by the other two. Each branch is a check on the

others. The legislative branch is described in Article 1 of the US Constitution. The legislative branch is
comprised of 100 US senators and 435 US members in the House of Representatives. This is better
known as the US Congress.
Making laws is the primary function of the legislative branch. But it is also responsible for
approving federal judges, passing the national budget and declaring war. Each state has 2 senators and
the number of representatives depending on how many people live in that state.
Part 2
The execute branch is described in the Article 2 of the US Constitution. The leaders of this branch
are the president and the vice president who are responsible for defense, laws, treasury and security.
The executive branch appoints government’s officials and meets leaders of other countries. The
executive branch employs a lot of people to do all the work.
The third branch of the power is the judicial branch. It is detailed in Article 3.
The judicial branch is made up of Federal District Courts, 11 Federal Courts and the Supreme
Court. This court interprets the nation’s laws and punishes those who break them.
The highest court, the Supreme Court settles state disputes, hears court appeals, and determines if
the federal laws are constitutional. So the US Court can declare laws unconstitutional.
There are 9 judges in the Supreme Court. Federal judges are appointed by the President for life and
can only be removed from office through the process of impeachment and trial in the Congress.
All democracy depends on participating people in all activities of the country’s government.
So, the main branches of the American government are legislative, judicial and executive and they
work together. Every person can be informed, involved and intelligent.
