Activity 1 :
Read the following text to get an idea about one of the documents. Pay
attention to its content and features.
RECOMMENDATIONS ON WRITING A CV
(текст взят из книги Л.Е. Тамбовской, Г.Т. Якушко «Как эффективно
устроиться на работу в иностранную компанию»)
A person entering a job market is likely to change jobs an average of six time in his
or her lifetime. The competition for good jobs is increasing, and if you know how
to prepare all the documents, you will be at a distinct advantage. Before a job
interview you should prepare a CV (Curriculum Vitae), which is a brief personal
history. It is considered more academic than a resume and is required for medical,
legal and academic professionals. It usually lists, but does not describe Education,
Training, Experience and Licenses. The content and format of CVs may vary
slightly, moreover you will have to prepare a new one each time you apply for a
job (as your experience or priorities change), but generally all CVs contain the
following information:
• Personal data (name, address and telephone number; date and place of birth,
age, marital status - married or single)
• Education (the name(s) of college(s), the dates of attendance, the degree, the
major; possible special courses relevant for the position; examinations passed,
especially if internationally recognized)
• Work experience (in reverse chronological order - the recent experience first;
includes your positions, the names of companies, the dates). If you don't have
working experience, mention summer or temporary jobs to underline the skills that
you picked.
• Skills, necessary for the potential career; outside interests, hobbies, etc.
• Other points might include publications, presentations, etc.
• References available upon request (you are not providing them here, but state
that if it is necessary. There are some people who can give you a reference –
characterize your personality, abilities, skills, etc.)
Remember three DON' Ts:
1. Don't write more than two pages (one page is optimal)!
2. Don't make spelling and grammar mistakes!
3. Don't use long sentences!
